The Bible has a lot to say about why children should listen to their parents and the blessings that come with obedience.

1. It Is a Command from God

The Bible makes it clear that children should obey their parents. One of the Ten Commandments states:

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12 (NIV)

Obedience is not just a rule but a command that brings blessings and longevity.

2. Obedience Brings Blessings

The apostle Paul reinforces this command in Ephesians 6:1-3:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’”

When children listen to their parents, they position themselves for God’s blessings and a fulfilling life.

3. Parents Teach Wisdom and Understanding

Proverbs 1:8-9 says:

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”

Parents have lived longer and have more experience. Their guidance helps children avoid mistakes and make wise decisions.

Proverbs 13:1 warns:

“A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.”
