Vanity Upon Vanity: Our True Home is Not on Earth



One of the greatest truths the Bible teaches us is that Earth is not our permanent home. We are only passing through. Life here is a temporary journey, and every human being, no matter how powerful, rich, or poor, will face death. This reality is not meant to bring fear but wisdom, reminding us to live with eternity in mind.

Life is Temporary

The book of Ecclesiastes begins with a powerful declaration:
“Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2, ESV).

King Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, had wealth, knowledge, and every earthly pleasure imaginable. Yet at the end of it all, he realized that everything under the sun is temporary. Money fades, beauty fades, kingdoms rise and fall, but our spirit lives on.

Our True Citizenship is in Heaven

Paul reminds us in Philippians 3:20:
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

We may live on Earth, but our true home is with God in eternity. That means we should not get attached to the temporary things of this world. Jesus Himself taught us in Matthew 6:19-20:
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Why We Must Value Our Spiritual Self

Since life on Earth is short, what truly matters is the condition of our soul. The gift of life is an opportunity for us to grow closer to God, walk in His ways, and prepare for eternity. Jesus asked an important question in Mark 8:36:
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

This reminds us that no amount of earthly success can replace salvation and a living relationship with God.

Living With Eternity in Mind

Every sunrise is a gift, a reminder that we have one more day to walk in obedience, to love others, and to grow spiritually. As Psalm 90:12 says:
“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

When we live with eternity in mind, we learn to let go of bitterness, greed, envy, and fear. Instead, we embrace faith, hope, and love — the things that endure forever.

Final Word

Beloved, remember this: Earth is not your home. You are a traveler preparing for an eternal kingdom that will never fade away. Live wisely, value your spiritual self, and set your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

The world may tell you to chase after riches, fame, and pleasures, but God is calling you to invest in eternity. Everything on Earth is temporary, but God’s promises are everlasting.
